MentorAbility Alberta:
Unlocking Potential and Building a Stronger Workforce

In the heart of Alberta’s dynamic and ever-evolving job market, a quiet revolution is taking place. It’s a revolution of inclusion, where diversity isn’t just a buzzword but an observed reality.

MentorAbility Alberta, spearheaded by Gateway Association, is leading the charge, fostering an environment where persons experiencing disability are empowered to reach their full potential in the workforce.

A Personal Touch: Mentorship that Makes a Difference

The exploration offered through MentorAbility extends beyond traditional, linear career paths. The program’s focus is on personal growth and empowerment, going beyond just job skills development.

“It's not just about matching skills.
It's about creating connections that last.”

Jamie Thiessen, MentorAbility Coordinator in Alberta, has observed the transformative power of mentorship. Mentorship and the guidance of a caring mentor enable mentees to discover their strengths, build confidence, and achieve their career goals. Mentors also find themselves with new perspectives, discover their own hidden talents, and increase their confidence.

Susannah Tawse, another MentorAbility Coordinator, echoes this sentiment, noting that success stories often involve “being able to navigate career paths and create connections,” demonstrating the range of opportunities that mentorship can open up.

She adds that the most rewarding aspect of her role is witnessing the “connections, relationships, and empowerment” that blossom through the program. “Every experience is unique and has powerful impact all around,” she explains.

The Ripple Effect of MentorAbility Experiences

MentorAbility Alberta’s commitment to individualized support, meaningful relationships, and a supportive learning atmosphere positions the program at the forefront of inclusive workplace initiatives. Program coordinators understand that success isn’t just measured by employment outcomes or individual career achievements; it’s about the transformative impact on each person’s life and throughout the community.

Susannah notes that MentorAbility fosters a ripple effect, impacting the broader lives of mentees and their communities. “These connections are not just professional,” she explains, “They become deeply personal and extend far beyond the workplace.” This interconnectedness is at the heart of the program’s impact.

“These mentorship experiences empowered a consulting professional to expand their business through strategic mentorship, transforming an initial connection into a lasting professional partnership,” Jamie shares. “In another case, an experienced hairstylist, after a career hiatus, relaunched her career thanks to personalized guidance and a welcoming work environment. This support enabled them to successfully re-enter the industry and become an inspiration to their peers.”

More than a Program: A Revolution for Inclusion

MentorAbility Alberta recognizes the unique strengths and talents of neurodivergent individuals, offering tailored support to help them navigate their career journeys. Jasmine Hasiuk, another MentorAbility Coordinator, emphasizes the importance of collaboration and community integration. “We have the connections across Alberta … I think we’ll be able to utilize that as a strength for building the project,” she explains.

By leveraging existing networks, MentorAbility Alberta ensures that individuals experiencing disability have access to a comprehensive support system. MentorAbility is committed to expanding opportunities and fostering an inclusive workforce across all industries in Alberta.

“Our goal is to ensure that no one is left behind. We're committed to reaching every corner of the province and connecting individuals with disabilities to the resources they need to succeed.”
