“It was really good to see how they did all the sorting (of recyclables), and the crusher was cool,” he said. “And it was nice to see all the different jobs they have there.”

Marcellus became a mentee in the MentorAbility mentorship program and had the opportunity to visit the SARCAN Depot in east Regina. This mentorship experience allowed Marcellus to discover the inner workings of this company well known to Saskatchewan residents for providing recycling services.

“It was really good to see how they do all the sorting, and the crusher was cool,” he shared Marcellus when asked about his first impressions. “And it was nice to see all the different jobs they have there.”

Wanita, the depot manager, guided Marcellus through the various stages of the recycling process, from sorting materials to their transformation. She also took the time to answer all his questions about the different positions and the skills required.

For Wanita, these visits are essential to give a realistic preview of the work to interested individuals: “It is always good for them to see what is required before applying.”

SARCAN is recognized for its commitment to the inclusion of people with disabilities and to competitive employment opportunities. This visit demonstrates the importance of partnerships like the one with MentorAbility to promote employment integration.

“There are always possibilities for people experiencing disabilities,” says Wanita. “We may just have to adapt. ”

SARCAN’s approach demonstrates that inclusion comes through valuing the skills of each individual, whatever they may be.

This experience allowed Marcellus to better understand the operation of a recycling center and to discover the different job opportunities it offers. It also highlights the importance of adaptation and openness to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in the workforce.
