Ed: Let it snow! Facilitated by WASO.
“Shoveled” loved his enthusiasm so much that they not only hired Ed for snow removal in the winter but also landscaping in the spring/summer too. Great job, Ed!

We love meeting all types of employers that are interested in being part of MentorAbility, helping people with disabilities gain on-the-job experience. This past fall we were lucky to connect with Cole of “Shoveled” – a commercial snow removal company in Winnipeg – and we learned about their business and how they’ve grown.

Cole was more than happy to provide mentorships to interested MentorAbility job seekers, so we quickly matched him with Ed – a Work & Social Opportunity client interested in outdoor labour. Initially, Cole met with Ed over coffee to discuss the details of snow removal, such as equipment used, employee requirements and key factors in commercial snow removal.

While Ed didn’t have any commercial snow removal experience, he helped friends and family clear snow from their driveways many times. Plus, he loved the idea of working outdoors and his enthusiasm for snow removal impressed Cole.

So, Cole invited Ed to view a condo complex that “Shoveled” was contracted to clear in the winter. This meeting allowed Ed to see the differences between commercial and personal snow removal, and Ed walked away from this MentorAbility Experience with a much better idea of how commercial snow removal operates.

Ed also walked away from this experience with a job as well! “Shoveled” loved his enthusiasm so much that they not only hired Ed for snow removal in the winter but also landscaping in the spring/summer too. Great job, Ed!
