“People with disabilities have a tremendous amount to offer and what they really need is understanding, because minor accommodations can make all the difference.” - Alex
Alex has a vibrant disposition, an eagerness to work, and an enthusiasm for life that is genuinely contagious. When he connected with MentorAbility Ontario, he was ready to make his mark and Susan Jeffers, owner of the Thunder Bay Answering Service, gave him exactly that chance.
Alex spent an afternoon with Susan exploring her business, learning about her customers’ needs, and discussing how he might contribute as a member of her team. The setting was comfortable and relaxed, he participated in an interview, spent time with staff, observed them at work, and asked questions in a hands-on environment that suited him well.
That afternoon led to something concrete: Alex was offered a position with the company, where he is currently training with senior staff to take calls and learn the computer system used to manage the high volume of incoming requests. His goal is to work part time as he builds his capacity and demonstrates the value he brings to the team.
When asked if he had a message for employers, Alex didn’t hesitate. He believes that every person with a disability has a tremendous amount to offer and that what they truly need is understanding, because minor accommodations in the workplace can make all the difference. Small acts of accommodation help people with disabilities become loyal, valuable, and retainable members of any team.
We thank Susan and the Thunder Bay Answering Service for this meaningful mentorship, and we celebrate Alex and everything he brings to the table!
