MentorAbility Experience Story: Athena
Athena enjoyed her MentorAbility experience and was happy that she got some hands-on experience arranging flowers and greenery.
Athena has a passion for flowers, and she is quite knowledgeable about plants and flowers as it’s one of her mother’s hobbies. Despite already knowing a lot about flowers and plants, Athena was eager to learn more about working in a flower shop, and she was thrilled to be part of a MentorAbility experience at the Flower Hut in British Columbia.
She shadowed the manager of the shop, Tammy. Tammy was full of knowledge and had many years of experience working with flowers, and Athena was happy to meet and learn from her. Tammy demonstrated how to assemble flower arrangements, the types of plants and flowers most often used for different occasions, and how flowers were stored to increase their life spans.
Athena showed a lot of interest and was very curious about everything Tammy showed her. She was also very friendly, knowledgeable and chatty, traits which Tammy said would make her an asset to the flower shop, and she told Athena to apply if she ever saw that the shop was hiring.
During her MentorAbility experience, Athena gained confidence and practical insights about what it’s like to work in a flower shop. The experience also helped her better understand how her interests and strengths could translate into future employment opportunities.
Tammy loved Athena’s enthusiasm and said she’d be glad to welcome her back for another mentorship in the future, to learn other aspects of working in a flower shop
