"They handle every step of the process, and the pies just keep coming! It was great to see it all in action."

By actively participating in real-world tasks and challenges, mentees can gain a deeper understanding of the job and enhance their problem-solving abilities. So, when Jorden participated in the MentorAbility mentorship program and landed a half-day mentorship at Chef Malcolm’s Handmade Pies, he was eager to get his hands dirty!

A passionate cook since high school, Jorden regularly cooks at home and has developed a particular expertise for pizza dough. His tours of pizzerias in Regina, organized by SaskAbilities Partners in Employment, further fueled his interest in the food industry. Today, he was excited to explore behind the scenes of a different type of culinary business: a handmade pie shop.

From the moment he arrived at Chef Malcolm’s, Jorden was immersed in the action. He met Chef Malcolm’s assistant and quickly put his skills to use. Jorden filled pies, assisted with preparation, and enthusiastically adapted to the team’s requests.

“Six hands are better than four, especially on a particularly busy Tuesday!” Jorden exclaimed with a smile.

Throughout the day, Jorden enjoyed the warm and welcoming atmosphere that permeated the shop. Chef Malcolm and his assistant Simon welcomed Jorden with open arms, sharing their passion for cooking and their artisanal expertise with him. Jorden appreciated their patience and encouragement, feeling valued and integrated into the team.

Beyond culinary techniques, Jorden was impressed by the rigorous organization and efficiency that underpinned the pie production. They discovered the behind-the-scenes workings of a small business, becoming aware of the effort and passion that drove Chef Malcolm and his team. This immersion in the artisanal world gave Jorden a new perspective on the food industry and the importance of work well done.

“They handle every step of the process, and the pies just keep coming! It was great to see it all in action,” Jorden said.

Leaving Chef Malcolm’s Handmade Pies, Jorden’s heart was filled with inspiration and his mind was buzzing with ideas. This mentorship experience had reinforced his desire to pursue a career in the culinary arts. He was in awe of Chef Malcolm’s work ethic and dedication to his craft. Jorden knew he had a lot to learn, but he was determined to rise to the challenge and forge his own path in the culinary world.

Jorden’s day at Chef Malcolm’s Handmade Pies was much more than a work experience. It was a unique opportunity to discover the inner workings of an artisanal business, share a common passion with experienced professionals, and draw inspiration for his own future. Jorden left the shop with valuable knowledge, a newfound appreciation for work well done, and strengthened motivation to pursue his dreams.
