MentorAbility Experience Story: Draven

Draven had been a gamer for years and had even begun to develop his own game. He wondered whether his passion for gaming and creating games was a viable career option. And, if developing games was a possibility, how would he go about getting there?

MentorAbility facilitators put a lot of thought and care in finding mentors that are a good match for mentees. So, when Draven expressed an interest in developing games, they organized a mentorship at Melcher Studios, an interactive production studio in Regina.

As a gamer and amateur game developer, Draven had fruitful conversations with each of the employees at Melcher about what their jobs entailed. He learned a lot about the different types of jobs in the industry. He was also very happy to try one of the studio’s virtual reality simulations, which is Melcher’s expertise.

One of the highlights for Draven was having the opportunity to present his idea for a game to the studio’s game developers. They offered valuable tips on how to advance his skills and where to connect with other beginner game developers.

Melcher Studios enjoyed the mentoring experience and have since provided multiple MentorAbility mentorships. Thanks for being supportive partners and helping to increase employment inclusion of persons experiencing disability!

This mentorship experience confirmed Draven’s interest in the gaming industry and provided the information he needed to consider his next steps. He discovered that he could continue to work on developing games without going back to school. After some thought, he decided to get a part-time job so that he can work on game development.
