I’m your host Alex Rascanu, national stakeholder engagement advisor for the Canadian Association for Supported Employment. Thank you for joining us for the second season of the podcast series. We ask that you like, subscribe, share this podcast. By bringing awareness to the topic of supported employment, you help our national network of supported employment service providers deliver increased employment inclusion for Canadians who experience disabilities.

The topic of our conversation today is the Disability Employment Awareness Month, which is celebrated in October each year across most of Canada as well as the United States; and was celebrated last month in British Columbia. During our conversation, you’ll hear us place special emphasis on the LightItUp! I’m Joanna Goode, Executive Director with the Canadian Association for Supported Employment.

Alex Rascanu: Joanna, could you please tell us about DEAM? What is DEAM exactly?

Joanna Goode: Sure. DEAM or Disability Employment Awareness Month (sometimes in Canada it’s called NDEAM for National Disability Employment Awareness Month) celebrates the contributions of people who experience disabilities in the workplace and recognizes the employers who are also committed to inclusion. It started in the United States a number of years ago and has been growing in popularity across Canada. While there are some regional differences in how and when provinces and territories celebrate DEAM, there’s a common commitment to recognizing the contributions of employees and employers to building a more diverse and inclusive Canadian workforce.

Alex Rascanu: How is CASE celebrating DEAM this year?

Joanna Goode: The Canadian Association for Supported Employment and MentorAbility Canada are engaging in three key initiatives to celebrate DEAM this year and we hope that you’ll take part in all three.
The 31 Days of DEAM social media campaign is an opportunity to share stories and events each day through the month of October. You can follow us on social media by checking out the hashtag #31DaysOfDEAM and also visit the CASE website [supportedemployment.ca] to submit your own ideas for sharing.
CASE is also launching a Cheers to Inclusion initiative for the month of October. This is an opportunity for employers from coast to coast to demonstrate their commitment to inclusion. For example, in Newfoundland there’s a DEAM proclamation event that’s going to be held at a local brewery where employers will join in the celebration. In other regions, DEAM logos will be put on coffee cups and other items to spread the word. There are also a number of lunch and learn events being planned for offices of different employers across the country.
We know that COVID restrictions may limit the number and types of in-person events, but we’re seeing a lot of great examples of creative ways that people are adopting to the circumstances in their own provinces and still hosting some fun and engaging events.
CASE has developed a free toolkit with social media frames and logos and bookmarks and other resources that you can share electronically or in print form.
Finally, we’re really excited to be joining with ODEN in the Light It Up! For NDEAM awareness campaign that will occur on October 21st. We’ll put the spotlight on disability inclusion in the workforce by illuminating landscapes across the country in purple and blue.

Alex Rascanu: All right, thank you so much. Let’s shift over to Jeannette. Jeannette, would you be able to start by introducing yourself?

Jeannette Campbell: Hi, Alex. Yes, my name is Jeannette Campbell and I am the CEO of the Ontario Disability Employment Network here in Ontario.

Alex Rascanu: Thank you. Jeannette, what is Light It Up! For NDEAM and where is it taking place?

Jeannette Campbell: Well, Light It Up! For NDEAM is a campaign that is a one night only event where landmarks, businesses and organizations light up in purple and blue. ODEN developed this campaign to help raise awareness of the National Disability Employment Awareness month and to shine a light on disability inclusive employment.
Last year was the first year. It was only in Ontario. This year, we made an amazing decision to partner with CASE and MentorAbility to take this nationally.
Cities and towns across the country are going to going to be lighting up on October 21st.
For example, in Newfoundland and Labrador the Iron Ore Company of Canada in Labrador City is lighting up their massive haul truck at their main entrance. In PEI, the City Hall Tower in Charlottetown is lighting up. In New Brunswick, the Legislative Assembly building in Fredericton is lighting up. In Quebec, we have Transport Canada and the Québec Custom House National Historic Site of Canada is lighting up. So you can see that there’s a lot of variability when it comes to the types of places that are going to be engaging.
And then we also have major landmarks such as Niagara Falls, the Horseshoe Falls, the CN Tower will be lighting up. In Ottawa, the ByWard Market sign is lighting up. We’ve got the Calgary Tower lighting up. BC Place in Vancouver is going to be lighting up. Even in the Northwest Territories there are places that are lighting up. The Greenstone Building of Canada in Yellowknife is lighting up. These are just the ones that we’re aware of so far. The list is growing, people are getting involved and engaged in all sorts of different ways. It’s organizations, it’s businesses, it’s major landmarks, it’s public spaces that are all taking the time to light up and shine a light on disability inclusive employment in Canada.

Alex Rascanu: This sounds really exciting. Jeannette, how can more employers and service providers get involved if they haven’t signed up yet?

Jeannette Campbell: It is happening on October 21st. We try to do this on the third Thursday of DEAM (or NDEAM), in October. Some of us still say October, most of us say DEAM.
There are many ways for employers and service providers to get involved. They can dress up in blue or purple sweatshirts, they can light their places up if they’re working from home (you can pull out those sparkly lights if you’ve got purple and blue ones). Businesses are doing all sorts of things, where they’re engaging their staff to wear colours; last year I remember people had purple and blue glowsticks.
If you want information about it, email us at lightitup@odenetwork.com. You can also go to ODENetwork.com and CASE’s website, go to the Initiatives section, and check out DEAM or NDEAM

Alex Rascanu: That’s very helpful. Thank you so much for sharing. Our final question, building on what Jeannette was just mentioning: how can listeners learn more about DEAM and Light It Up! For NDEAM, Joanna?

Joanna Goode: As Jeannette has said, the easiest way to learn more about our activities this year is to visit the CASE website at SupportedEmployment.ca/DEAM. You’ll find information there about the different initiatives that CASE is hosting, there’s an opportunity to share information about the events you have planned in your region or to download the Cheers to Inclusion toolkit or Facebook profile frames. There are lots of opportunities and links there to Cheers to Inclusion and to the Light It Up! For NDEAM events. You can also reach out to the MentorAbility Canada team, who will be really happy to hear from you and share ideas about how you can become more involved this October.

Alex Rascanu: Thank you so much to both of you for joining us for the first episode in season two of the Abilities at Work podcast.

Joanna Goode: Thanks, Alex.

Jeannette Campbell: Thanks, Alex.

Alex Rascanu: Joanna Goode from the Canadian Association for Supported Employment and Jeannette Campbell from the Ontario Disability Employment Network, we appreciate the time you gave to sharing your thoughts on DEAM and LightItUp! for NDEAM.

Please like, subscribe, and share the Abilities at Work podcast.
