or<\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/6tIFTQvEyQWLuIhmOwLQlk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spotify<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supportedemployment.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Abilities-at-Work-podcast-logo-1.png\" alt=\"Abilities at Work podcast logo\" class=\"wp-image-6070\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><strong>Podcast episode transcription:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This is Abilities at Work, a weekly podcast hosted by the Canadian Association for Supported Employment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Alex Rascanu:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Hello everyone!&nbsp;I\u2019m&nbsp;your host, Alex&nbsp;Rascanu.&nbsp;Episode&nbsp;eight&nbsp;of the Abilities at Work podcast&nbsp;showcases&nbsp;the Disability Employment Awareness Month&nbsp;(DEAM), which is celebrated in&nbsp;September in British Columbia, and in&nbsp;October across&nbsp;the rest of&nbsp;Canada&nbsp;and&nbsp;in&nbsp;the United States of America.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>On today\u2019s episode we feature&nbsp;Mary&nbsp;Beshai,&nbsp;who serves as&nbsp;Director of&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada at the Canadian Association for Supported Employment, and&nbsp;Ashley Hammond,&nbsp;who&nbsp;serves with&nbsp;Avalon Employment and&nbsp;leads the&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada&nbsp;initiative for&nbsp;Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as&nbsp;Prince Edward Island.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br><strong><em>Mary Beshai:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;DEAM (Disability Employment Awareness Month) or NDEAM (National Disability Employment Awareness Month) occurs every October to promote and celebrate inclusion of people with disabilities in the workplace.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>The initiative started out in 1945 in the USA, where the employment contributions and challenges faced by people who experience disability were highlighted for the first week of October, and it has evolved into a month-long celebration as well as&nbsp;awareness campaign of the positive outcomes of hiring persons with disabilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>It is now gaining in importance across Canada.&nbsp;Every year during&nbsp;the month of October&nbsp;we spread the word around the importance of workplaces that are inviting and inclusive to people&nbsp;experiencing&nbsp;disability.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>CASE&nbsp;[Canadian Association for Supported Employment]&nbsp;sees DEAM as an excellent opportunity for Canadian Employers and Employment Service Providers to&nbsp;demonstrate&nbsp;their ongoing commitment to Canadians with disabilities and to&nbsp;also&nbsp;promote employment inclusion in our country.&nbsp;<br><br><strong><em>Alex Rascanu:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>Next, we asked Mary to let us know why DEAM is important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Mary Beshai:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;People with disabilities still face barriers to employment in Canada.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>Our last census&nbsp;indicates&nbsp;that 22% of Canadians experience disability\u2026&nbsp;that\u2019s&nbsp;more than 1 in 5 Canadians, and yet less that 60% of working aged people with disabilities are employed.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>When you look at our labour market in Canada, the Conference Board of Canada. They are&nbsp;predicting&nbsp;that in the next 10 years, Canada will have a 2 million worker shortfall.&nbsp;<br>There is a strong business case for employing people with disabilities \u2013 from the benefits that a diverse teams provide, the talents and skills that the individuals bring to their work, and even business performance and customer loyalty and satisfaction&nbsp;improvements.&nbsp;A survey performed in 2008 shows that 78% of Canadians are more likely to buy a product or use a service from a business that hires people with disabilities.&nbsp;And yet, people experiencing&nbsp;disabilities&nbsp;are under-represented in the workplace.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>DEAM is just one way we, as a community and nation, can come together to acknowledge our efforts and commitments to removing those barriers for people who experience disabilities&nbsp;&#8211; those who are unemployed,&nbsp;underemployed, and even those who are employed but seeking career progressing pathways.&nbsp;<br><br><strong><em>Alex Rascanu:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>Let\u2019s&nbsp;now find out from Ashley&nbsp;Hammond&nbsp;how she describes DEAM in her own words.&nbsp;<br><br><strong><em>Ashey Hammond:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>I think that, at the heart [of it], DEAM is an awareness campaign that\u2019s [meant] to help the public recognize the contributions of individuals with disabilities in the workplace, but&nbsp;also to break down some of the stigma and barriers that they unfortunately still face in the workplace today. It gives everybody a chance to learn&nbsp;what those barriers are (bust some of those myths_, and&nbsp;gives employers an opportunity to learn what it means to be&nbsp;an accessible and inclusive employer for people with disabilities, and what that looks like.&nbsp;<br>I think&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;a great way&nbsp;that we can come together locally,&nbsp;regionally,&nbsp;and nationally as a community to&nbsp;facilitate&nbsp;that through&nbsp;all of&nbsp;our connections across Canada, [and] to host several events and activities throughout&nbsp;the month of October.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;really fun&nbsp;to be part of [it] and to be in a role where I get to&nbsp;facilitate&nbsp;that in my region.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>I\u2019m&nbsp;really excited about our initiative this year, especially with the success that I had locally last year with the local brewery that I worked with.&nbsp;I\u2019m&nbsp;really excited&nbsp;to see what happens this year, as we take it to the national scale.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>I\u2019m&nbsp;really excited about our Light It Up! Campaign as well, to get some federal and provincial buildings lit up, and to also get some businesses to light up and&nbsp;participate&nbsp;as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>I\u2019m&nbsp;excited that&nbsp;we\u2019re&nbsp;growing DEAM this year&nbsp;and&nbsp;expending&nbsp;it to make it a national initiative.&nbsp;<br><br><strong><em>Alex Rascanu:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>Finally,&nbsp;let\u2019s&nbsp;find out from Mary how&nbsp;employers and&nbsp;supported employment service providers can get involved with DEAM this October.&nbsp;<br><br><strong><em>Mary Beshai:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;There are&nbsp;a number of&nbsp;ways in which employers and service providers can get involved.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>I\u2019d&nbsp;like to go back a bit to talk about&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>MentorAbility&nbsp;is a national initiative that providers employers with a safe and&nbsp;easy way&nbsp;to learn about inclusive workplace for people experiencing a disability, while also&nbsp;providing&nbsp;a short-term mentorship opportunity to someone interested in your industry.&nbsp;<br>This year, CASE and the&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada initiative are engaging in three activities, and we invite employers and service providers to join us for any of those!&nbsp;<br>Furthermore, the&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada network, which spans&nbsp;hundreads&nbsp;of service providers across the country are also undertaking their own activities locally so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>The first initiative&nbsp;I\u2019d&nbsp;like to&nbsp;talk about is 31 Days of DEAM. CASE is offering&nbsp;this for the 3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;year in a row.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;a social media campaign that promotes the&nbsp;great work&nbsp;being done by service providers and inclusive employers across the country.&nbsp;Each day of&nbsp;the month of October, CASE will share DEAM highlights&nbsp;on our social media&nbsp;networks,&nbsp;and&nbsp;we invite submissions of stories and&nbsp;events&nbsp;that are happening in&nbsp;your community.&nbsp;<br>The second is an activity called Cheers to Inclusion! The&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada team is working with employers from coast to coast to&nbsp;demonstrate&nbsp;their commitment to&nbsp;becoming&nbsp;more inclusive. There are so many ways to&nbsp;participate&nbsp;in this initiative:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>We can provide you with a DEAM 2021 logo that you can add on your products or service promotion for the full month of October, or materials for social media&nbsp;engagement;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>You can host a DEAM event at your workplace \u2013 anything from an information session to sharing online or printed pamphlets with staff and clients, or even offer a mentoring day or mentoring opportunities during&nbsp;the month of&nbsp;October;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>And for service providers out there \u2013 we can support you in organizing a special Proclamation Day in your municipality and we also invite you to you can nominate an inclusive employer in your area.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada team is eager to hear from you and work with you on this \u2013 so please reach out!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">And&nbsp;last but not least, I would like to talk about an initiative called&nbsp;the&nbsp;LightItUp! for NDEAM&nbsp;campaign.&nbsp;One of CASE\u2019s members,&nbsp;ODEN&nbsp;lit up government buildings last year on October 21<sup>st<\/sup>. This was a successful&nbsp;initiative,&nbsp;and we are delighted to work with them, to bring it&nbsp;to the national level. So far, we have close to&nbsp;80 structures in 43&nbsp;locations across the country already confirmed&nbsp;&#8211; this includes large cities, as well as small towns. Chaque ann\u00e9e, au mois d&#8217;octobre, nous faisons conna\u00eetre l&#8217;importance des lieux de travail qui&nbsp;accueillent et incluent les personnes en situation de handicap.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">L&#8217;ACSE [Association canadienne&nbsp;du soutien \u00e0 l\u2019emploi] consid\u00e8re le&nbsp;MSEPSH&nbsp;comme une excellente occasion pour les employeurs canadiens et les&nbsp;prestataires&nbsp;de services d&#8217;emploi de&nbsp;faire preuve d\u2019engagement continu envers les Canadiens&nbsp;en situation de handicap&nbsp;et de&nbsp;faire la promotion&nbsp;de leur&nbsp;inclusion&nbsp;en emploi&nbsp;dans notre pays.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Alex&nbsp;Rascanu:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Nous avons ensuite demand\u00e9 \u00e0 Mary de nous dire pourquoi le&nbsp;MSEPSH est important.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Mary&nbsp;Beshai:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Les personnes&nbsp;en situation de handicap&nbsp;sont toujours confront\u00e9es \u00e0 des obstacles \u00e0 l&#8217;emploi au Canada.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Notre dernier recensement indique que 22 % des Canadiens sont handicap\u00e9s&#8230; c&#8217;est plus d&#8217;un Canadien sur cinq, et pourtant moins de 60 % des personnes&nbsp;en situation de handicap&nbsp;en \u00e2ge de travailler ont un emploi.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lorsque qu\u2019il analyse le march\u00e9 du travail au Canada, le Conference Board&nbsp;du&nbsp;Canada&nbsp;pr\u00e9voit qu\u2019il y aura p\u00e9nurie de 2 millions de travailleurs dans les 10 prochaines ann\u00e9es.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Les avantages de l&#8217;embauche de personnes&nbsp;en situation de handicap&nbsp;sont ind\u00e9niables, qu&#8217;il s&#8217;agisse des avantages que procure la diversit\u00e9 des \u00e9quipes, des talents et des comp\u00e9tences que ces personnes apportent \u00e0 leur travail, ou m\u00eame de l&#8217;am\u00e9lioration du rendement de l\u2019entreprise&nbsp;et de la fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 et la satisfaction de la client\u00e8le. Une \u00e9tude r\u00e9alis\u00e9e en 2008 r\u00e9v\u00e8le que 78 % des Canadiens sont plus susceptibles d&#8217;acheter un produit ou d&#8217;utiliser&nbsp;les&nbsp;services&nbsp;d&#8217;une entreprise qui embauche des personnes&nbsp;en situation de handicap. Et pourtant,&nbsp;elles sont&nbsp;sous-repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es&nbsp;en milieu de&nbsp;travail.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Le&nbsp;MSEPSH&nbsp;n&#8217;est qu&#8217;un moyen parmi d&#8217;autres pour nous, en tant que communaut\u00e9 et nation, de nous unir pour saluer nos efforts et notre engagement \u00e0 \u00e9liminer&nbsp;les&nbsp;obstacles pour les personnes&nbsp;en situation de handicap&nbsp;&#8211; celles qui sont au ch\u00f4mage, sous-employ\u00e9es, et m\u00eame celles qui ont un emploi&nbsp;et&nbsp;qui&nbsp;cherchent \u00e0&nbsp;faire progresser&nbsp;leur carri\u00e8re.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Alex&nbsp;Rascanu:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Voyons maintenant comment&nbsp;Ashley Hammond&nbsp;d\u00e9crit le MSEPSH dans ses propres mots.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Ashley Hammond: <\/em><\/strong>Je pense qu&#8217;au fond,&nbsp;le MSEPSH&nbsp;est une campagne de sensibilisation qui a pour but d&#8217;aider le public \u00e0 reconna\u00eetre les contributions des personnes&nbsp;en situation de handicap&nbsp;en milieu&nbsp;de travail, mais aussi de briser la stigmatisation et les obstacles auxquels elles sont malheureusement encore confront\u00e9es aujourd&#8217;hui&nbsp;dans les&nbsp;milieux&nbsp;de travail. Elle donne \u00e0 chacun l&#8217;occasion d&#8217;apprendre ce que sont ces obstacles (de briser certains de ces mythes), et aux employeurs l&#8217;occasion d&#8217;apprendre ce que signifie \u00eatre un employeur inclusif&nbsp;qui&nbsp;assure&nbsp;l\u2019accessibilit\u00e9&nbsp;aux&nbsp;personnes&nbsp;en situation de handicap, et&nbsp;de savoir&nbsp;\u00e0 quoi cela ressemble.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Je pense que c&#8217;est une excellente fa\u00e7on de nous rassembler localement, r\u00e9gionalement et nationalement en tant que communaut\u00e9 pour faire en sorte que cela soit possible gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 toutes nos&nbsp;liens&nbsp;\u00e0 travers le Canada, [et] pour organiser plusieurs \u00e9v\u00e9nements et activit\u00e9s tout au long du mois d&#8217;octobre. C&#8217;est tr\u00e8s agr\u00e9able de participer \u00e0 ce projet et de jouer un r\u00f4le qui me permet de faciliter les choses dans ma r\u00e9gion.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Je suis vraiment emball\u00e9e&nbsp;par l&#8217;initiative que nous prenons cette ann\u00e9e, surtout au vu du succ\u00e8s que j&#8217;ai rencontr\u00e9 localement l&#8217;ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re avec la brasserie locale avec laquelle j&#8217;ai travaill\u00e9.
