Persons with autism can face challenges and discrimination in workplaces, leading to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/publications\/diseases-conditions\/infographic-autism-spectrum-disorder-highlights-canadian-survey-disability.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an employment rate of only 33%<\/a>&nbsp;for those 20-64 years old, which is significantly lower than that for the general population (<a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/t1\/tbl1\/en\/cv.action?pid=1410028702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">72%<\/a>&nbsp;in February 2025).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Recent research suggests that job seekers and workers with ASD can reach successful employment outcomes when they guide their own job search and when they are assisted by families, service providers, and employers.&nbsp;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8caf303 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8caf303\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Strengths of Workers with Autism<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eeb8a37 elementor-widget learning more about their area of work<\/li><li>a strong work ethic and a strong sense of social justice and fairness [2]<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element people with autism and persons with similar challenges. Adaptive support or scaffolding can be used to incrementally reduce parental or caregiver assistance, as needed, with tasks such as job seeking and financial management.\u00a0<\/p><p>A promising practice is parent-to-parent support to build social support systems, like parent mentor programs, to reduce caregiver stress and feelings of isolation [1].<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-720c1c6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"720c1c6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Pre-Employment Training<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f4a1dbc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f4a1dbc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Pre-employment training or work-related experiences can support successful employment outcomes for people with autism. In one program in which employment specialists engaged in job development with on-site support and job retention techniques, 98.4% of job seekers with ASD secured competitive employment in unique positions. Of those, 77% had never worked before. In all cases, the job seeker directed the job search and, ultimately, the job selection [3].\u00a0<\/p><p>Employers play a key role in job development by assessing their labour needs and helping to develop roles that match both organizational needs and workers\u2019 strengths.
