Persons experiencing disability and immigrants can be particularly susceptible when darker, more isolating seasons are combined with existing stressors. They may have less energy for personal and work-related tasks. Individuals may feel lonely because they spend less time outside for errands and activities. These symptoms can be signs of the winter blues and may be familiar to many people living in Canada.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1d2eb3b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1d2eb3b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For some people, these seasonal struggles are more severe and can result in depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). SAD is a form of depression with a seasonal pattern: it occurs more frequently during the fall\/winter months and improves when spring begins.\u00a0<\/p><p>Common symptoms of <strong>depression<\/strong> can include:<\/p><ul><li>Feeling sad and losing interest in normal activities\u00a0<\/li><li>Loss of energy and increased fatigue, despite sleeping\u00a0<\/li><li>Feeling irritable, empty, hopeless, worthless, or guilty<\/li><li>Difficulty thinking and concentrating (1)<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3e57aac elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3e57aac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In addition to the symptoms of depression, people who experience <strong>SAD<\/strong> may also eat more than usual and crave carbohydrates.(2) The symptoms for SAD usually decrease with the arrival of spring, while those for depression occur year-round.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-03cf738 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"03cf738\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a04c362\" data-id=\"a04c362\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6415d9a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6415d9a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">People Most Affected by SAD<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b45a813 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b45a813\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>While anyone can be affected by SAD, <b>people who experience depression <\/b>may be more susceptible. In one Canadian study, almost 15% of respondents experienced recurrent depression and approximately 3% of those experienced SAD.(3)<\/p><p><b>People who experience disability <\/b>may have higher rates of depression. A study found that persons experiencing disability in the UK were 2.8 times more likely and those in Greece were 2.2 times more likely to experience depressive symptoms than people without disabilities.(4) In Canada, persons experiencing disability may spend less time outdoors during the fall\/winter, which can contribute to increased feelings of isolation and higher susceptibility for SAD.<\/p><p><b>Newcomers and immigrants <\/b>often arrive in Canada with lower rates of depression, but these levels can rise over time. Stressors related to a major socio-economic, cultural, and personal transition and exposure to racism and discrimination can contribute to increased depression.(5) For immigrants from warmer climates, fall and winter in Canada can be particularly difficult. Unique barriers also influence how newcomers and immigrants access primary care to help address mental health challenges.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f010909 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f010909\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Workplace Strategies Can Help Counter Seasonal Struggles<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-48fab7b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"48fab7b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Workplaces can implement the following strategies to help support employees through the fall and winter months.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9b9f770 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"9b9f770\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a20ec86\" data-id=\"a20ec86\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-61fb49e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"61fb49e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n \t<li><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\"><strong>Reminders of Available Supports<\/strong>: In the fall\/winter, send employees an email reminding them of the mental health supports available through your workplace and in the community. Highlight support and services offered at no cost.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><p><\/p>\n \t<li><strong>Share Information about Local Cultural and Immigrant Organizations<\/strong>: Research and share (via billboard, internal chat, or email) information about community cultural and immigrant organizations that offer support, programs, or events that can increase social engagement and a sense of belonging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><p><\/p>\n \t<li><strong>Organize Social Events\/Activities<\/strong>: Organize optional events\/activities for employees, at work or in the community. Employees can be consulted for suggestions. Consider accessibility and the needs of people who may be struggling with social interactions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><p><\/p>\n \t<li><strong>Offer Exercise\/Mental Health Breaks<\/strong>: Breaks can help us to stay active and literally break the monotony or \u201cblah\u201d of fall\/winter days.
