I\u2019m your host, Alex&nbsp;Rascanu. The fourth episode of the Abilities at Work podcast&nbsp;showcases the Government of Canada-funded&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada initiative. As we sat down with&nbsp;Mary Beshai,&nbsp;National Director for&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada&nbsp;at the Canadian Association for Supported Employment, we&nbsp;asked her to share with us what&nbsp;is the&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada initiative.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>Mary Beshai:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>Thanks, Alex, for the opportunity to speak.&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada is a national initiative funded by the Government of Canada through its Opportunities Fund&nbsp;for Persons with Disabilities. The initiative is coordinated nationally by the Canadian Association for Supported Employment in concert with provincial and regional coordinators across the country who engage with their own provincial and regional networks. Together, we&nbsp;make up&nbsp;the&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada team and network!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I formally joined this team in a national coordination role a few months ago \u2013 and must say how thrilled I am to be a part of it! The provincial coordinators are these amazing, dedicated professionals and inspirational individuals who come from well-established community-based organizations that are committed to workplace inclusion. Some come from service provider organizations that directly facilitate engagements between people who experience disabilities and employers. Others come from member-based organizations who engage with their local communities of practice (provincially, regionally or at some other level of reach). We are all brought together by our common goal of strengthening workplaces that are more inclusive to people experiencing disability, and securing meaningful, competitive employment opportunities for those who seek them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At its core,&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;is based on the premise that positive change can be influenced though relationships and learning and that even short interactions can raise awareness and opportunities for all involved. And the supported employment backbone on which&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;is built, can provide valuable, longer-term supports, to support employers in making positive change that stands the test of time.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>Alex&nbsp;Rascanu:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>Next, we&nbsp;asked Mary to&nbsp;describe the&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada&nbsp;experience from the perspective of employers, supported employment service providers, and individuals who experience disability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>Mary Beshai:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>What we provide in&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;are a series of complementary offerings to employers and service providers, in support of proteges, who are people who experience disability and who are seeking career exploration opportunities. At a national, regional, and provincial level, we offer both formal and informal training and supports. These can include online or in-person workshops, although today most of our activities are online these&nbsp;days,&nbsp; information&nbsp;sessions, webinars, multi-media resources and tools, and opportunities to participate in facilitated, one-one mentoring matches. It is through these mentoring matches &#8211; the preparations, the experience itself, and post-mentorship reflections and continued learning, that we see the greatest change. Especially because it is performed in a risk-free way for those participating \u2013 there is no cost involved. For the mentors, there is no expectation of being asked for a job offer at the end of it. For the prot\u00e9g\u00e9 \u2013 it is not a formal job interview, simply an opportunity to meet with someone who is working in an area of mutual interest and passion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Through these short, time-bound mentoring experiences, which can last for less than an hour to a full day in length, we provide an opportunity for Canadian employers, from all sectors, to gain experience that will help them better understand what might be involved to diversify their workplace to better include someone who may experience a disability on their team. For the prot\u00e9g\u00e9, it provides an opportunity to learn more about a career area or job role of interest to them, to help in their own career planning. The mentoring matches themselves are facilitated by the&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;network of service providers who are engaged in the initiative.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We see so many benefits of this type of interaction. There is a lot of hidden knowledge around working in a given sector or job role, or working in a specific workplace culture that you cannot easily learn through google searches and reading. The best way is to talk to someone who is in the area and who can share their personal and professional insights! For the prot\u00e9g\u00e9, the mentoring match experience provides a pathway to gain some of that knowledge. After a mentoring experience, we have proteges who have gained a deeper understanding of what would be involved to pursue that specific career path of interest, and to make decisions as to what they want to do next! Does the role or sector meet their expectation as a potential career possibility, do they feel it is a good fit for them?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">For the mentor, after planning for and participating in a mentoring experience, the mentor gains firsthand experience that could be valuable to them, their manager, and employer overall. By meeting and speaking with the prot\u00e9g\u00e9, the possibilities become more real \u2013 could I imagine this prot\u00e9g\u00e9 in this role? Or in a different role? What changes would we need to put in place to welcome the prot\u00e9g\u00e9 in our workplace and into this team? These reflections after the mentoring experience are part of the experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The secret sauce for all of this, is the service provider network!&nbsp; The service provider who facilitated the mentoring match is available afterwards to provide additional supports to the employer and prot\u00e9g\u00e9 alike.&nbsp;<br><br><strong><em>Alex&nbsp;Rascanu:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>Next, we asked Mary to highlight some of the results that the MentorAbility Canada initiative has achieved so far. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>Mary Beshai:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>The&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;initiative started out, years ago, as a provincial project in British Colombia, and then it was later implemented in Saskatchewan. In 2019,&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;Canada was formed and brought the initiative to the national stage.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The strength in the&nbsp;MentorAbility&nbsp;network comes from its own diversity:&nbsp;<br>&#8211; The missions and mandates of the organizations that comprise the leadership of the initiative differ;<br>&#8211; The service providers have their own unique mandates and geographical reach from rural communities to urban centres;<br>&#8211; Even the ways that SE supports are provided and governed provincially may differ.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">These differing perspectives provide opportunities for dialogue, learning from one another, sharing what works and what doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This has enabled us to develop good and promising practices and resources together, which builds a strong foundation for this national initiative.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">COVID has certainly affected our project over the past year, and it continues today as provinces are each in different phases of recovery and reopening. Despite these challenges, since 2019, we have offered close to 1000 events and mentoring matches, and have reached over 9000 employers, service providers, and people experiencing disabilities and their advocates through these mentoring, training, networking and social media information sharing activities. We are seeing encouraging results:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supportedemployment.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/image-1024x296.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5914\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supportedemployment.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/image-1024x296.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.supportedemployment.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/image-300x87.png 300w, https:\/\/www.supportedemployment.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/image-768x222.png 768w, https:\/\/www.supportedemployment.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/image-600x173.png 600w, https:\/\/www.supportedemployment.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/image.png 1396w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Our movement to more online activities, including mentoring matches and training events, is allowing provincial barriers to be a thing of the past, and is offering more opportunities! As an&nbsp;example,&nbsp;intra-provincial and inter-provincial engagements are now happening to a level they did not before. An example, a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 in a rural community in Ontario may be engaging in a mentoring experience with a mentor from an employer based in downtown Toronto. A mentor in Nova Scotia may be engaging with an employer located in Quebec. People from across the country, from rural communities to those in large cities can participate in our webinars.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In coming episodes, you will have opportunities to hear from the provincial and regional coordinators, and learn more about the work we do. C\u2019est par le biais de ces jumelages de mentorat, y compris les pr\u00e9parations, l\u2019exp\u00e9rience elle-m\u00eame, les r\u00e9troactions apr\u00e8s le mentorat et la formation continue, que nous observons le plus grand changement.&nbsp; D\u2019autant plus que cela se fait d\u2019une fa\u00e7on qui permet d\u2019\u00e9viter les risques pour les participants et que cela n\u2019entra\u00eene aucun co\u00fbt.&nbsp; En ce qui concerne les mentors, ils ne s\u2019attendent pas \u00e0 recevoir une offre d\u2019emploi \u00e0 la fin du mentorat.&nbsp; Pour les mentor\u00e9s, il ne s\u2019agit pas d\u2019un entretien d\u2019embauche officiel, mais&nbsp;simplement d\u2019une occasion de rencontrer quelqu\u2019un qui travaille dans un domaine pour lequel ils \u00e9prouvent le m\u00eame int\u00e9r\u00eat et la m\u00eame passion.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u00c0 travers ces br\u00e8ves exp\u00e9riences de mentorat, qui durent parfois d\u2019une heure \u00e0 une journ\u00e9e, nous offrons la possibilit\u00e9 aux employeurs canadiens de tous les secteurs de vivre une exp\u00e9rience qui leur permettra de mieux comprendre ce qu\u2019il leur faudrait pour avoir un milieu de travail diversifi\u00e9 en vue de mieux inclure une personne en situation de handicap dans leur \u00e9quipe.&nbsp; Pour les mentor\u00e9s, c\u2019est une occasion d\u2019en savoir plus sur un domaine de carri\u00e8re ou un poste qui les int\u00e9ressent afin de pouvoir pr\u00e9parer leur propre carri\u00e8re.&nbsp; Les jumelages de mentorat eux-m\u00eames sont facilit\u00e9s par le r\u00e9seau de prestataires de services de&nbsp;MentorHabilet\u00e9s&nbsp;impliqu\u00e9s dans l\u2019initiative.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Nous observons de nombreux avantages avec ce type d\u2019interactions.&nbsp; Il existe beaucoup de connaissances cach\u00e9es concernant le travail dans un secteur ou un poste donn\u00e9, ou le travail dans une culture organisationnelle particuli\u00e8re qui ne sont pas faciles \u00e0 trouver lors de recherches personnelles ou de lectures.&nbsp; La meilleure fa\u00e7on consiste \u00e0 s\u2019entretenir avec une personne qui est dans le domaine ou qui peut partager son exp\u00e9rience personnelle et professionnelle! Pour les mentor\u00e9s, l\u2019exp\u00e9rience du jumelage de mentorat est un moyen pour acqu\u00e9rir une partie de ces connaissances.&nbsp; Apr\u00e8s une exp\u00e9rience de mentorat, les mentor\u00e9s ont une meilleure compr\u00e9hension de ce qui est n\u00e9cessaire pour poursuivre la carri\u00e8re qui les int\u00e9resse et sont en mesure de prendre des d\u00e9cisions par rapport \u00e0 ce qu\u2019ils veulent faire par la suite! Est-ce que le poste ou le secteur r\u00e9pond \u00e0 leurs attentes en tant que possibilit\u00e9 de carri\u00e8re, sentent-ils que c\u2019est un bon choix pour eux?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Apr\u00e8s avoir pr\u00e9par\u00e9 et particip\u00e9 \u00e0 une exp\u00e9rience de mentorat, les mentors acqui\u00e8rent une exp\u00e9rience pratique qui pourrait \u00eatre utile pour eux, leur gestionnaire et leur employeur en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral.&nbsp; En rencontrant les mentor\u00e9s et en discutant ceux-ci, les possibilit\u00e9s deviennent plus concr\u00e8tes, par exemple\u202f: pourrais-je imaginer ce mentor\u00e9 \u00e0 ce poste? Ou \u00e0 un autre poste? Quels changements devrions-nous apporter pour accueillir le mentor\u00e9 dans notre milieu de travail et dans cette \u00e9quipe? Ces r\u00e9flexions apr\u00e8s le mentorat font partie de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Le r\u00e9seau de prestataires de services est la recette secr\u00e8te pour tout ceci!&nbsp; Le prestataire de services qui facilite le jumelage de mentorat est disponible par la suite pour apporter un soutien suppl\u00e9mentaire \u00e0 l\u2019employeur et au mentor\u00e9.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>Alex Rascanu :&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>Par la suite, nous avons demand\u00e9 \u00e0 Mary de pr\u00e9senter certains r\u00e9sultats de l\u2019initiative MentorHabilet\u00e9s Canada jusqu\u2019\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><em>Mary Beshai :&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>L\u2019initiative MentorHabilet\u00e9s a commenc\u00e9, il y a quelques ann\u00e9es, sous forme d\u2019un projet provincial en Colombie-Britannique et fut plus tard mise en \u0153uvre en Saskatchewan.&nbsp; En 2019, MentorHabilet\u00e9s Canada a \u00e9t\u00e9 form\u00e9e et a projet\u00e9 l\u2019initiative sur la sc\u00e8ne nationale.&nbsp;<br><br>La force du r\u00e9seau de MentorHabilet\u00e9s r\u00e9side dans sa diversit\u00e9\u202f:&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>&#8211; Les missions et les mandats des organismes qui constituent la direction de l\u2019initiative divergent.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>&#8211; Les prestataires de services ont leurs propres mandats et couvertures g\u00e9ographiques qui s\u2019\u00e9tendent des communaut\u00e9s rurales aux centres urbains.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>&#8211; M\u00eame la fa\u00e7on dont les mesures de soutien \u00e0 l\u2019emploi sont apport\u00e9es et r\u00e9gies \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle provinciale diff\u00e8re parfois.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Ces diff\u00e9rentes perspectives permettent de dialoguer, d\u2019apprendre les uns des autres et de discuter de ce qui fonctionne et de ce qui ne fonctionne pas.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cela nous a permis de d\u00e9velopper ensemble des pratiques et des ressources prometteuses de qualit\u00e9 et d\u2019\u00e9tablir de solides assises pour cette initiative nationale.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">La COVID a certes eu un effet sur notre projet durant la derni\u00e8re ann\u00e9e et c\u2019est toujours le cas, car les provinces sont chacune \u00e0 diff\u00e9rents stades de reprise et de r\u00e9ouverture.&nbsp; Malgr\u00e9 ces d\u00e9fis, nous avons offert, depuis 2019, pr\u00e8s de 1000\u202factivit\u00e9s et jumelages de mentorat, et avons touch\u00e9 plus de 9000\u202femploy\u00e9s, prestataires de services et personnes en situation de handicap, ainsi que leurs porte-parole dans le cadre de ces activit\u00e9s de mentorat, de r\u00e9seautage et de partage d\u2019informations sur les m\u00e9dias sociaux.&nbsp; Les r\u00e9sultats sont encourageants\u202f:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"241\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supportedemployment.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/2021-08-12_15-08-27.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5918\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supportedemployment.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/2021-08-12_15-08-27.png 620w, https:\/\/www.supportedemployment.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/2021-08-12_15-08-27-300x117.png 300w, https:\/\/www.supportedemployment.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/2021-08-12_15-08-27-600x233.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Notre passage \u00e0 l\u2019organisation d\u2019un plus grand nombre d\u2019activit\u00e9s en ligne, y compris les jumelages de mentorat et les formations, fait des barri\u00e8res provinciales une chose du pass\u00e9, ce qui nous offre plus de possibilit\u00e9s.&nbsp; Par exemple\u202f: les engagements intraprovinciaux ont d\u00e9sormais atteint un niveau in\u00e9gal\u00e9.&nbsp; Par exemple, un mentor\u00e9 dans une communaut\u00e9 rurale de l\u2019Ontario peut participer \u00e0 un mentorat avec le mentor d\u2019un employeur bas\u00e9 au centre-ville de Toronto.&nbsp; Un mentor de la Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse peut collaborer avec un employeur du Qu\u00e9bec.&nbsp; Des gens de partout au pays, qu\u2019ils viennent de communaut\u00e9s rurales ou de grandes villes, peuvent participer \u00e0 nos webinaires.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Dans les prochains \u00e9pisodes, vous aurez l\u2019occasion d\u2019entendre des coordonnateurs provinciaux et r\u00e9gionaux et d\u2019en savoir plus sur notre travail.
