We will all experience various types of functioning in our lifetime. Universal design provides equitable use of environments, products, and learning for people of all abilities. The definitions, goals, and benefits of universal design can help us understand how to apply it in the workplace.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7e814eb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7e814eb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Le\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/universaldesign.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre of Excellence for Universal Design\u00a0<\/a>defines universal design as \u201cthe design and composition of an environment so that it can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. An environment (or any building, product, or service in that environment) should be designed to meet the needs of all people who wish to use it. This is not a special requirement, for the benefit of only a minority of the population. It is a fundamental condition of good design.\u201d website.\u00a0<\/p><p>In 2012, eight goals were also devised to broaden the emphasis to wider issues of social inclusion.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/access\/help-and-support\/topic3\/GoalsofUniversalDesign.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A new definition for universal design\u00a0<\/a>was developed: Universal Design is \u201ca design process that enables and empowers a diverse population by improving human performance, health and wellness, and social participation\u201d (Steinfeld and Maisel, 2012).\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-88f4a44 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"88f4a44\" data-element_type=\"section\" health promotion (physical, mental, and emotional), avoidance of disease, and protection from hazards.<\/p><p>6. <b>Social Integration<\/b>: Treating all groups with dignity and respect.<\/p><p>7. <b>Personalization<\/b>: Incorporating opportunities for choice and the expression of individual preferences.<\/p><p>8. <b>Cultural Appropriateness<\/b>: Respecting and reinforcing cultural values, and the social and environmental contexts of any design project.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section also recognize that no environment, product, or service will ever be fully usable by every single person.
