While 25 percent of all employees self-identify as having a disability, most companies report that just four to seven per cent of their employees experience disability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-bb4d6cd elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"bb4d6cd\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-30ddb82\" data-id=\"30ddb82\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a48865d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a48865d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Most disabilities are not visible. For instance, mental health conditions are the most prevalent in the US.<\/span><\/p><p>Three workplace realities emerged from a 2023 report (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcg.com\/publications\/2023\/devising-people-strategy-for-employees-with-disabilities-in-the-workplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Your Workforce Includes People with Disabilities. Does Your People Strategy?<\/a>) by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG):<\/p><ul><li>Employees who experience disability are significantly under-disclosing due to fear of stigma or the impact on job security or promotion.<\/li><li>Employers are missing an opportunity to enable a quarter of their workforce to bring their full selves to work.<\/li><li>Employers\u2019 decisions about investments in tailored support systems are founded on inaccurate data.<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><div><p>The BCG report shows that organizations can improve disability inclusion<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">\u2014<\/span>and the workplace experience of all employees<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\">\u2014<\/span>by implementing:<\/p><ul><li>employee-centric policies and programs, such as flexible work,<\/li><li>mentorship, which improves overall happiness at work, and<\/li><li>workplace accommodations.<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-c7b4fc2\" data-id=\"c7b4fc2\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aa175a2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"aa175a2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supportedemployment.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/elementor\/thumbs\/Graphic-Workplace-Disability-Diversity-qb09yo832f7loqkcxi05kkr4in66kc6tdv3uh5gnx0.jpg\" title=\"Graphic Workplace Disability Diversity\" alt=\"Photo of five people sitting in a circle in an office, one of whom speaking.\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-daa028b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"daa028b\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-379fbfd\" data-id=\"379fbfd\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dc3aea5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"dc3aea5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Workplace inclusion for all persons is crucial from a human perspective. <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a1985dc elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a1985dc\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d1c95ca\" data-id=\"d1c95ca\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-936ceec elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"936ceec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">While the business case for diversity and inclusion is important, it should be balanced with the case for systemic justice for all, including persons experiencing disability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35679195\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recent research <\/a>from the Yale School of Management and the London Business School suggests that the business case for inclusion can be a turn-off for underrepresented job candidates. The need for a business case forces some groups to justify their existence to the more privileged or, in the case of persons experiencing disability, to prove their existence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">It\u2019s worth noting that this research included LGBTQ+ professionals, female job seekers in STEM and African American students\u2014and no persons experiencing disability.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is Disability the Forgotten Diversity in the Workplace?
