x-text\">\n<ul class=\"tick-list\">\n \t<li class=\"font_8\">Barriers to accessibility are obstacles that make it difficult, or sometimes impossible, for persons who experience disability to fully participate in life.<\/li><br>\n \t<li class=\"font_8\">Barriers may be visible or invisible. Examples are:\n<ul>\n \t<li class=\"font_8\">Attitudinal (treating persons experiencing disability differently)<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"font_8\">Informational and communication (messages that cannot be received or understood)<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"font_8\">Systemic (barriers in policies, practices and procedures)<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"font_8\">Physical and architectural (preventing access)<\/li>\n \t<li class=\"font_8\">Technological (technology or the way it is used does not meet the needs of persons experiencing disability)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-987b8bb\" data-id=\"987b8bb\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cff673d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cff673d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Why is it important?<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"tick-list\">\n \t<li><b>One in seven <\/b>adult Canadian citizens currently lives with a disability.<\/li><br>\n \t<li><b>Most Canadians will experience disability at some point in their lives. <\/b>Communities need to be accessible so that everyone can participate and live full lives.<\/li><br>\n \t<li>Accessibility is a win-win situation for all Canadians. By making workplaces more accessible, citizens who experience disability can more easily <b>access the labour market, achieve economic self-sufficiency, and participate in the economy<\/b>. When shops, restaurants, entertainment and sport facilities are fully accessible, business owners have an opportunity to <b>increase their customer base <\/b>and ultimately earn more revenue.<\/li><br>\n \t<li>Many provinces (including Ontario)<b> legally require employers to take proactive steps to implement accommodation policies<\/b> (see the Accessibility for\u00a0Ontarians with Disabilities\u00a0Act, 2005).<\/li><br>\n \t<li>The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities acknowledges the concept of disability as being directly related to lack of accessibility. <b>Lack of accessibility is primarily the result of attitudinal and environmental barriers<\/b> that hinder citizens\u2019 full and effective participation in society on an equal basis. These principles include dignity, independence, integration and equal opportunity. Check our glossary of terms to find descriptions for all of these terms and others.<\/li><br>\n \t<li class=\"font_8\">Making your business accessible involves reviewing your hiring practices, understanding accessibility needs as they relate to career growth, and having a communication plan that informs all employees of the support available.<\/li><br>\n \t<li class=\"font_8\">Once you have created a policy, it&#8217;s vital that you communicate this to all of your staff and provide the information in an accessible format.<\/li><br>\n \t<li class=\"font_8\">It&#8217;s also important to offer training around the policy and establish a feedback process. This currently includes: the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act\u00a0(AODA), the Accessibility for Manitobans Act, and\u00a0the Nova Scotia Accessibility Act. British Columbia is striving to reach their &#8220;Accessibility 2024&#8221; vision of being the most progressive province in Canada for persons experiencing disability. Although the remaining provinces and territories may not yet have province specific legislation, they are facing significant pressure to release accessibility legislation in the future and are at various stages of this process.<\/li><br>\n \t<li class=\"font_8\">Accessibility requirements for buildings vary between provinces and are gradually changing;
